Cafe 290

Sometimes your body tells you it's time for some Yellow Food. Cafe 290, a roadside restaurant in Manor, Texas about 20 minutes east of Austin, has the best Yellow Food ever. Yellow Food is another term for southern comfort food, in my world. This includes but is not limited to anything (usually fried) that should be served with cornbread and gravy.

We started off with the Chicken Fried Universe, an appetizer platter of onion rings, fried green tomatoes, fried zucchini, fried mushrooms, and fried green beans, served with a side of delicious Ranch dressing.

I had the fried catfish platter with fried okra and mashed potatoes. It was yummy, but I still think T.C.'s has better catfish.

Jenn had the Chicken Fried Chicken and it was bigger than her face. Probably some of the tastiest Chicken Fried Chicken I've ever had. Notice she ordered French Fries and Mashed Potatoes as her two sides. This girl knows how to do Yellow Food.

Jill ordered a standard cheeseburger just so she could get more onion rings. She wasn't entirely impressed with the burger, so I'd suggest you stick with something fried.

Everything came with rolls and cornbread muffins and gravy. Yeah.

I ate here many years ago hoping to get their Chicken and Dumplings. Instead I had the Chicken Fried Steak which was also bigger than your face. I missed the Chicken and Dumplings again this time around. But next time I'm going back for the Chicken and Dumplings special which is on Mondays I've learned. Yes, Chicken and Dumplings are yellow.

Breaded catfish is a Christmas Eve traditional dish here in Hungary.

And tell Jill she is cute.

I just went to a deep-fry party and someone was making catfish that was breaded in capt'n crunch. It was strangely delicious.

I was wondering if Andy still owns this restaurant? I need to check it out on my way to Austin sometime.

I been going to Cafe 290 for a least 3 or 5 years and i enjoying going there. I love the Fried Green Tomato and The Universe for appetizer and The Monday thru Wednesday for All you can eat Specials. And the waitress (Kelly) and Waiter (Michael) are good waitstaff. Some off waitstaff needs to be more friendly and good attitude. And pay more attention to the door when some is coming in to dine. And the busy people needs needs more approvement. And never see a Managers or Owners in the building at all and if so they are not friendly at all. When my Wife and I come there in summer it is a little to hot in there. But it is a nice and friendly community there and We will not going to any other place that is close to by Your Friendly Jack and Cindy
